An Interview with Eva Wiechmann

We recently had the chance to interview Eva Wiechmann, the popular author of Pursenalities, Pursenality Plus, Crocheted Pursenalities, and her latest book, Simple Stitches.

You’ve become an expert on both knitting and crochet. How did you get started working in fiber arts?

I grew up in Finland, where needlework was always a part of our lives. I learned to knit at the age of four and cannot recall a time when I didn’t have a project or two going. I knitted with my mother, sister, aunts, cousins, and friends. We did not have many patterns, so everything was pretty much our own design.

Your newest book, Simple Stitches: Knits with Textured Details, which just released in April, welcomes knitters to the “stress-free knitting zone.” What makes these lovely designs so simple to stitch?

There’s very little counting, decreases and increases are minimal, and shaping is created by easy pattern stitches. And best of all, there’s minimal finishing, since the garments are made in one piece.

Which fibers are your favorites for knitwear?

My favorites are blends of merino wool and silk. Merino wool just makes stitches look perfect, and that little twist creates a pattern all by itself.

What’s one tip you would give someone who is new to garment knitting?

Don’t stress out about your knitting. It’s not the end of the world if you have to rip out, but to avoid mistakes, keep an eye on your tension and measure your work frequently.

Your books show your versatility as a designer. How did you create so many eye-catching designs for Pursenalities, Pursenality Plus, and Crocheted Pursenalities?

I look for clever details in the fashion industry. Mostly, though, I cast on some stitches and just start knitting. The yarn talks to me and tells me what to do.

What makes felted purses so popular?

It’s probably because felting hides some imperfections you might have with your work. Also, the fabric is strong enough that it doesn’t need lining. It also allows the crafter to become more creative.

What are some responses you’ve received from your readers?

I get lots of comments about the felted-purse books. People love the styles and the easy-to-follow instructions. There was a reader who told me that she made 40 bags from the patterns in my books, and then she quit her job and decided to open up a yarn shop in her area. She has never been happier! Her comment to me was, “You never know just what impact you will have on someone’s life.” That made me feel good.
