MomCats

Finished quilt: 24 1/2" x 26 1/2"

Materials

All yardages are based on 42"-wide fabric.

  • 1/4 yard each of 4 prints
  • Scraps of additional prints for spools
  • 1 yard for background, sashing, borders, and binding
  • 7/8 yard backing fabric
  • 4 lace-edged doilies or handkerchiefs
  • Scraps of ribbon or bias tape for aprons
  • 6" scraps of 1/8"-wide ribbon for bows

Cutting

Note: The squares and rectangles you cut will not look like the corresponding pieces in the block diagram because all the diagonals are speed-pieced. The diagram shows you the location of each piece, not its actual shape.

CUTTING CHART

Piecing the Blocks

Press all seam allowances in the direction of the arrows unless otherwise stated.

Cat Blocks

1. To make the ear units, speed-piece a cat 2 to each end of a background 1 as shown.

2. To make mirror-image pairs of hip units, sew a background 3 to a cat 4 as shown.

3. To make mirror-image leg units, speed-piece a cat 2 to a background 5 as shown.

4. Sew the ear unit to one end of a cat 6.

5. Sew a hip unit to each side of the body and then add a leg unit to each side.

Spool Blocks

1. To make the side units, speed-piece a spool 8 to each end of a background 7.

2. Sew a side unit to each side of a spool 9.

Assembling and Finishing the Quilt Top

1. Arrange Cat blocks together in 2 rows of 2 each, adding vertical sashing strips between the blocks. Sew blocks and sashing strips in horizontal rows.

2. Sew the horizontal sashing strip between the rows. Press seam allowances toward the sashing strip.

3. Sew the inner border to the sides first, then to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press seam allowances toward the inner border.

4. Arrange 42 spool blocks around the edge of the quilt top; 11 each across the top and bottom, and 10 on each side. Alternate the positions of the spools as shown. Sew Spool blocks together to make pieced borders.

5. Sew the pieced borders to the sides first, then to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press seam allowances toward the inner border.

6. Sew the outer border to the sides first, then to the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press seam allowances toward the outer border.

7. Layer the quilt top with batting and backing; baste.

8. Quilt around each cat and each spool; quilt the background in diagonal lines 1" apart.

9. Bind the edges of the quilt.

10. For aprons: Using the template below, cut an apron from each doily or handkerchief. Turn under 1/4" along the top edge and gather to fit the cat body; or gather and bind the top edge with ribbon or bias tape. Position the apron as shown on the body and hand sew it to the Cat block along the top edge of the apron.

11. Tack a ribbon bow to the neck of each cat.
