Currency
The official currency of Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHR). However, the widely accepted and commonly used currency in Cambodia is the US Dollar (USD). In fact, most transactions, especially in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and larger businesses, are conducted in US Dollars. It’s recommended to carry a mix of US Dollars and Cambodian Riel when traveling in Cambodia
- Official currency: Cambodian Riel (KHR)
- Widely accepted: US Dollar (USD)
- Small‑denomination USD bills (US $1, $5, $10) are preferred for everyday purchases
- Usage tips:
- Vendors in tourist areas quote prices in USD; change is often given in Riel
- Rural markets and small shops may only accept Riel
- ATMs dispense both USD and KHR—check fees with your bank before departure
- Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants, and shops, but always carry some cash
